Co-Founder and President
Rick Pierro is co-founder and owner of Superior Controls and has over twenty-five years of control systems experience. Mr. Pierro has served as President of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Boston Area Chapter and has been on the ISPE Board of Directors since 2004 as Chairman of Student Affairs. He is currently Chairman of the ISPE International Membership Committee, a Trustee for the New Hampshire High Technology Council and is Chairman of the Board of Advisors for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Engineering Department. Mr. Pierro’s longtime support of the UMass Lowell’s Francis College of Engineering earned him the “Francis College Distinguished Engineering Award” in 2003.
In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of Acumentrics Corporation, a leading fuel cell development and manufacturing company, E-Trolz, Inc., a leading provider of technology for electrophysiological medical devices, Mind Child Medical, a leading neonatal EKG medical device manufacturer, and Degree Controls, Inc., a leading thermal dissipation company for the IT industry.
Prior to Superior Controls, Mr. Pierro held various positions in project engineering, sales, and sales management. His work experiences include serving as an automation engineer at a systems integrator, where he designed and implemented PLC-based control systems for both the chemical and food and beverage industries.
Mr. Pierro graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Chemistry in 1981 and received his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lowell in 1983. He researched and wrote his thesis on the testing of advanced PID tuning techniques for process control applications, and also taught several process control courses. He later completed several business courses at Harvard Business School. He is a frequent guest speaker on topics ranging from biotech automation, batching, and FDA validation requirements such as 21CFR Part 11, Process Analytical Technology, and GAMP.
Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer
Mark LaRoche graduated from University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. He later received his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University in 1993.
Mr. LaRoche began his career as a project engineer and has extensive experience in designing, programming and implementing automated control systems for the biotech, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and specialty chemical industries. Over the years he advanced through positions of Project Manager, Proposals Manager, and Engineering Manager.
In 1993, Mr. LaRoche co-founded Superior Controls, Inc., an engineering services company focused on industrial automation for the Life Science industry. Always focused on excellence, Superior Controls has received a number of prestigious awards including Control Engineering Magazines ‘Systems Integrator of the Year’ and NH Business Magazines ‘Technology Business of the Year’. Additionally, the company was the 1st ever to attain 6-time Certification from the Controls Systems Integrator Association (CSIA), an organization focused on best practices.
Now with over 120 automation engineers and over 150 total employees, Superior Controls is headquartered in New Hampshire and has additional offices on the west coast and in upstate New York. Mr. LaRoche continues his leadership as COO.
In 2009, Mr. LaRoche bought, and is still co-owner of, The 401 Tavern located in Hampton, NH. A job he refers to as his “side gig”. He serves on the board of directors for numerous companies and is an investor in a number of medical device start-up companies. He is a long time member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering and the International Society of Automation and a rabid Boston sports fan.
