For a pharmaceutical manufacturer running multiple full, commercial-scale products simultaneously, generating multi-ton quantities of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), upgrading a hard-coded control system from the 1990s may sound like an impossible challenge. Superior Controls West (Banks Integration) was up to that challenge when asked to design and install a completely new process control system upgrade for the manufacturer.
While they were at it, the customer wanted to convert their single-product semiworks facility to a midscale production facility capable of producing a variety of products…without increasing the project budget. And further, as part of the plant upgrade, the manufacturer wanted the facility to provide a new manufacturing capability: the production of regulated materials such as controlled substances requiring a solution that must conform to strict regulatory requirements and the increased security demands.
Here is a sneak-peek at the technology we installed on this project: as a Rockwell Automation Solution Partner, we have an in-depth understanding of Rockwell Automation’s PlantPAx process automation system and felt it was the best fit for the customer’s production requirements. Logix Batch & Sequence Manager was added for the controller-based batch solution, and Allen-Bradley IntelliCENTER motor control and PowerFlex drives gave us the precise control we needed for critical pumps.
