In our continuing blog series introducing the Superior Controls corporate leadership, this post spotlights the East Coast management team, who we have asked to share details of their tenure with the company, information about their background, and personal fun facts.  Be sure to also read about our West Coast Management Team.

Rick Pierro,President

Rick PierroPresident Rick Pierro co-founded Superior Controls in 1993.  Acquired by Falfurrias Capital Partners-backed E Technologies Group in 2019, Superior Controls is now the Life Sciences Center of Excellence of the E Technologies Group family of brands which includes Banks Integration Group’s offices in Vacaville and San Francisco, CA

Rick earned a B.A. in chemistry and biology from Boston University, an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and has completed several courses at Harvard Business School.  Prior to co-founding Superior Controls, Rick held various positions in automation engineering, business development, and sales management for systems integrators focused on the process automation industries.

Rick has served as president of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Boston Area Chapter and has served for many years on the ISPE Board of Directors as Chairman of Student Affairs and Chairman of the International Membership Committee. He is currently a trustee for the New Hampshire High Technology Council, chairman of the Board of Advisors for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Engineering Department, and serves on the Board of Advisors of the University of New Hampshire Chemical Engineering Department. Rick’s longtime support of the UMass Lowell Francis College of Engineering earned him the “Francis College Distinguished Engineering Award.”

Rick is also a frequent keynote speaker at professional events throughout the country on a variety of subjects, including evolving FDA validation and manufacturing requirements, the future of biotech manufacturing, and best business practices.

In addition, Rick serves on the Board of Directors of Acumentrics Corporation, a leading rugged battery development and manufacturing company, E-Trolz, Inc., a leading provider of technology for electrophysiological medical devices, Mirtle Medical, a leading manufacturer of EKG diagnostic devices used in the MRI environment, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Mind Child Medical, a leading neonatal EKG medical device manufacturer.

Fun facts: Rick’s secret passions are studying history, traveling, and boating.  He has taken his family on adventures in Morocco, Italy, Ecuador (Galapagos), and throughout the Western U.S.  Rick and his family also have lived on his boat, appropriately named “Superior Controls,” while visiting Nantucket and other East Coast destinations.

Damon Robbins, Vice President of Operations

Damon Robbins, VP of Operations, has served with Superior Controls since 2002. He is responsible for the risk analysis, evaluation, and qualification of project opportunities, conceptual design of control systems, and development of project costing.  Damon works closely with the Superior Controls sales and engineering departments, and has been a project manager and project engineer for the team.

Damon is a member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Boston Area Chapter.  Prior to joining Superior Controls, Damon held various positions in the manufacturing and service sectors including engineering management, product and sales engineering, project management, and project engineering. His work experience also includes being involved in the architecture, design, and automation/controls of machinery that was awarded one of Time magazine’s Inventions of the Year for 2000.

Damon graduated from Western New England College with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 1993 and received his M.B.A. from the University of New Hampshire in 2004.

Fun facts: Damon is an avid skier and his family is involved with the Gunstock Ski Club.  He volunteers at youth and adult ski races throughout New Hampshire and New England.  Damon and his wife have three boys who all ski race and play lacrosse.

Bob Patrick, Vice President of Engineering

Bob PatrickBob Patrick has been with Superior Controls since 2001, and has worked at every level within the company’s engineering team, from project engineer all the way up to his current position as vice president of engineering. Since 2011, Bob has been overseeing Superior Controls’ East Coast engineering team.

Bob holds a BS and MS in mechanical engineering.  While in graduate school at Tufts University in 1995, Bob joined a small automation company in Woburn, MA, where he programmed his first PLC.  That experience led him to focus in automation for his master’s thesis.  Since that time, Bob has worked on systems in various industries including biotech, automotive, food and beverage, chemical, and electric power.

When not at work, Bob enjoys spending time with friends and family.  He and his wife have 3 children.  The couple’s son is a mechanical engineering student at UMass Lowell.  Bob and his family enjoy hiking to places like Mount Washington, the highest peak in New England and home of the “worst weather in the world.”

Fun Facts:  Bob worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 2 summers as a backcountry patrol covering the Presidential Range in Northern New Hampshire.  “We would provide information to hikers, perform trail maintenance, and the occasional rescue,” said Bob.  “I would regularly get comments from hikers that I had one of the best jobs ever.  I have to agree that it was pretty cool.”

Ken Hackett, Business Development Manager

Ken HackettA 30-plus-year veteran of the automation industry, Ken Hackett joined Superior Controls in 2016 after spending two-and-a-half decades with Horizon Solutions, a Rockwell Automation distributor.  Over those 25 years, Ken held several positions from warehouse, to sales manager covering the Northeast, including NY, VT, NH, MA and Canada. While working in sales, Ken covered such diverse industries such as pulp and paper, food and beverage, automotive, biotech, and more.  Ken is based out of the company’s Albany, New York office.

 Fun Facts: When not at work, Ken enjoys golf, softball, poker nights, and watching live sporting events.  It is also rumored that he has a secret past which our investigations have recently uncovered.
